Matthew holds an Honours degree in Music Performance from the Elder Conservatorium of Music and is completing a Graduate Diploma in Management (Arts and Culture) at the University of South Australia.
Prior to commencing his position with the ASQ in April 2004, he held the positions of Orchestra Manager with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra (liaising with the likes of Red Symons and maestro Richard Bonynge), Assistant to the Program Manager with ABC Classic FM (during Clive Robertson's Breakfast reign), and Music Program Assistant with the 2004 Adelaide Festival.
He was a Program Coordinator for the 2010 Adelaide Festival, where he worked on the two largest events of the Festival, the Ligeti opera Le Grande Macabre and Mahler's Symphony No 8.
A trombonist, Matthew has performed in concerts, ballets, operas and on tours with the Adelaide, Canberra and Elizabethan Theatre Trust Symphony Orchestras, the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra and the Adelaide Art Orchestra (AdAO). With AdAO, he has performed in several Adelaide Cabaret Festivals, the Adelaide Beatles Festival, for the Kiev Ballet, on ABC Classic FM's Sunday Live and a Country Arts SA regional tour, concerts with Marina Prior, Rob Guest, Rhonda Burchmore and BSG (ex Little River Band), and the annual Adelaide Festival Centre Christmas Proms with Dennis Olsen, Rachel Beck, Andy Seymour, Tim Campbell and Christine Anu. A highlight however, was being conducted by Sir George Solti with the then South Australian Youth Orchestra in a workshop during the 1988 Adelaide Festival.
Whilst at ABC Classic FM, Matthew worked with the production team and co-produced the concert recording of Graeme Koehne's High Art Trumpet Concerto with James Morrison and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, which has become a staple of the network's play list.
He has also performed with the Band of the South Australian Police and in touring musical productions such as Porgy and Bess and South Pacific.
